How to Donate Your Birth Tissue

Steps to Donate

Step 1: Notify your doctor.
Let your healthcare provider know early in your pregnancy (or whenever you decide) that you’d like to donate. They can connect you with a trusted partner organization or provide information about their donation program. There’s no rush – you can sign up anytime before delivery, and even late decisions are welcome.

Step 2: Sign the consent form and answer some questions.
You’ll complete a short consent form and brief health questionnaire. This only takes a few minutes. All personal information is kept confidential – a unique code is used on the tissue instead of any names or private details.

Step 3: Have a quick blood test.
As part of your hospital visit, you’ll give a small blood sample prior to delivery. This is a routine safety check and can be done alongside your regular prenatal bloodwork – no extra appointments needed.

Step 4: Deliver your baby as planned.
Enjoy your delivery experience and focus on meeting your baby! After birth, our trusted partner organization will handle the safe and respectful recovery of the placenta and umbilical cord tissue. This happens post-delivery and does not interfere with your labor or care.

Step 5: The tissue is processed to help patients.
Once recovered, the tissue is sent to a specialized lab where it’s tested and prepared for transplant. It may be transformed into healing grafts for patients with burns, wounds, or other injuries. You won’t need to do anything else – your decision to donate can change lives.

Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us if you cannot find an answer to your question.

No. Donation happens after your baby arrives, so your labor and delivery proceed exactly as planned. It poses no risk to you or your child, and doctors agree that choosing to donate won’t change the care you or your baby receives.

Your donation is completely confidential. All identifying information is kept private. We only use a code on the tissue, and no one will know whose it was. Your details are protected at every step.

No, there are no costs or fees to you, and donors do not receive payment. This is a voluntary gift. You simply provide the donation at no charge, and we handle the rest.

Most programs welcome donations from all healthy moms. If you’re planning a cesarean, your placenta is often used for transplants. If you have a vaginal delivery, we can still use the tissue for research and training. Either way, we appreciate your gift and can guide you on the best option.

The collection of the placenta and cord happens after the baby is born, so your baby’s well-being is always top priority. As mentioned, donation is considered a living donation with no risk to mother or baby
