How to Donate Your Birth Tissue

Steps to Donate

Step 1: Notify your doctor. Let your healthcare provider know early in your pregnancy (or whenever you decide) that you’d like to donate. They can put you in touch with a donation coordinator or give you information about the program. There’s no rush – you can sign up anytime before you deliver, and even late decisions are welcome.

Step 2: Sign the consent form and answer some questions. You’ll complete a short form and a brief health questionnaire. This usually only takes a few minutes. We keep all your personal information confidential only a unique code is put on the tissue, so no names or private details are shared.

Step 3: Have a quick blood test. Like other prenatal tests, you’ll give a small blood sample at the hospital before delivery. This is a routine check to make sure everything is safe and can be done alongside your regular bloodwork. It doesn’t add extra visits or stress.

Step 4: Deliver your baby as planned. Focus on meeting your baby! After your baby is born, our team will carefully collect the placenta and cord tissue. This collection happens after delivery, so you won’t have any extra procedures during labor. Your baby and your comfort come first at every step.

Step 5: The tissue is processed to help patients. Once collected, the tissue is sent to a lab where experts test and prepare it for transplant. Your placenta may be turned into grafts that help heal burns, wounds, or other injuries. You don’t have to do anything else – just know that you’ve given an incredible gift.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. Donation happens after your baby arrives, so your labor and delivery proceed exactly as planned. It poses no risk to you or your child, and doctors agree that choosing to donate won’t change the care you or your baby receives.

Your donation is completely confidential. All identifying information is kept private. We only use a code on the tissue, and no one will know whose it was. Your details are protected at every step.

No, there are no costs or fees to you, and donors do not receive payment. This is a voluntary gift. You simply provide the donation at no charge, and we handle the rest.

Most programs welcome donations from all healthy moms. If you’re planning a cesarean, your placenta is often used for transplants. If you have a vaginal delivery, we can still use the tissue for research and training. Either way, we appreciate your gift and can guide you on the best option.

The collection of the placenta and cord happens after the baby is born, so your baby’s well-being is always top priority. As mentioned, donation is considered a living donation with no risk to mother or baby
